The fuel pressure relief control is an electrically controlled valve on the fuel rail that the engine control module opens to reduce rail pressure deliberately, for example on overrun, on load drops or when the engine is switched off. It differs from the purely mechanical pressure relief valve, which opens passively at overpressure, and from the pressure regulator, which controls pressure continuously. Manufacturer documents show this code mainly on heavy-duty diesel engines. P009D reports too high a voltage in the control circuit, typically a short to battery voltage. Rail pressure can then not be reduced as intended, and the engine may be derated.
Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Avoid long trips and hard acceleration. If you smell fuel or the car stalls, do not continue.
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Reduced power (derate) possible
Most likely causes
- Wiring chafed with short to battery voltage, or connector corroded
- Valve coil faulty
- Output driver in the engine control module faulty
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- Repair difficulty: medium
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P009D means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- 0: Subsystem depends on the code range
- 9D: Specific fault in that system
