The charge air cooler temperature sensor for bank 2 (an NTC thermistor) measures the charge air temperature in the second charge-air path, for example on V engines with two charge air coolers. The engine control module uses it for the air mass calculation, boost control and component protection. For P00A2, the sensor signal is below its valid range. With the usual voltage-type NTC sensor this means a short to ground, and the control module reads an extremely high temperature; some manufacturers use sensors with a frequency output, where a low signal instead corresponds to an extremely low temperature (open circuit or short to ground). Bank 2 codes occur only on engines with two separate intake or charge-air paths, one per cylinder bank.
Low severity. Can I keep driving?Yes, you can normally keep driving and take it to a repair shop when convenient.
Bank 2 is the side without cylinder 1, so it only exists on V or boxer engines.
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Usually no noticeable symptoms
- Slightly changed power or knock control with an implausible reading
Most likely causes
- Sensor shorted internally or signal wire shorted to ground
- Connector damp or corroded
- On frequency-output sensors: open circuit
- Engine control module faulty
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- Repair difficulty: easy
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P00A2 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- 0: Subsystem depends on the code range
- A2: Specific fault in that system
