After a long standstill (six hours in a documented case) all intake air temperature sensors, for example intake air, charge air cooler and manifold temperature, should read about the same. The control module compares them in pairs: if one sensor stands out, it sets that sensor's own plausibility code. This code is set when no pair agrees, so no single sensor can be identified as faulty. A detected engine preheater suspends the test. Since it runs only after a long standstill, the code may take a night to return after being cleared. Some vehicles also disable start-stop while this code is stored.
Low severity. Can I keep driving?Yes, you can normally keep driving and take it to a repair shop when convenient.
Bank 1 is the side of the engine with cylinder 1. Inline engines only have this bank.
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Start-stop disabled on some vehicles
- Usually no drivability symptoms
Most likely causes
- One temperature sensor drifting without setting its own code
- Uneven cooling, undetected preheater or strong sunshine
- Shared ground or reference line disturbed, falsifying several sensors
- Engine control module or software
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- Repair difficulty: medium
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P00CE means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- 0: Subsystem depends on the code range
- CE: Specific fault in that system
