P0114: Intake Air Temperature Sensor 1 Circuit Intermittent/Erratic Bank 1

Intake air temperature sensor 1 is the first air temperature sensor in the intake path; depending on the vehicle it is built into the mass air flow sensor, mounted near the air filter or, on some naturally aspirated GM engines, fitted in the intake manifold. Most versions are NTC thermistors in a 5 V divider: the hotter the air, the lower the signal voltage. P0114 covers an unsteady signal. Air temperature changes slowly, so rapid jumps point to the wiring rather than the air. Ford counts short excursions out of range that are each too brief for P0112/P0113 and sets the code after ten of them in one drive cycle. GM evaluates noise within the valid range: if the readings taken every 100 ms add up to more than 80 °C of movement within one second, in four of five seconds, the sample counts as failed. GM needs two trips. Typical culprit is a loose contact that opens with engine movement.

Low severity. Can I keep driving?Yes, you can normally keep driving and take it to a repair shop when convenient.

Bank 1 is the side of the engine with cylinder 1. Inline engines only have this bank.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Usually no noticeable symptoms
  • Occasional brief stumble or rough idle possible

Most likely causes

  • Loose contact at the connector (corrosion, weak terminal tension)
  • Partly broken wire that opens with engine movement
  • Sensor with internal contact problem
  • Electrical interference or ground fault

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0114 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • 1: Air and fuel
  • 14: Specific fault in that system
