According to its title, P0169 means the control module has detected a fuel composition outside what is expected – wrong fuel or an impermissible ethanol or water content – while the composition sensor itself works. None of the manufacturer OBD documents checked (GM, Ford) uses the code: GM reports water or conductive fuel via the ethanol sensor frequency as P2269, and Ford has had no composition sensor since 2000. Claims that diesel makers use it for misfuelling or water could not be verified. The description therefore rests on CARB, which lists the fuel composition sensor as a monitored component, and on component information. Unrecognised fuel usually also shows up as mixture adaptation codes.
Low severity. Can I keep driving? You can normally keep driving. If it affects the fuel level, do not trust the gauge and refuel earlier than usual.
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Poor cold start, stumbling, loss of power
- Mixture adaptation codes (P0171/P0172)
- Higher consumption
Most likely causes
- Wrong fuel (E85 in a non-flex-fuel vehicle, ethanol content outside calibration)
- Water or contamination in the fuel
- Fuel composition sensor drifting (value in range but wrong)
- Control module software
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- Repair difficulty: medium
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P0169 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- 1: Air and fuel
- 69: Specific fault in that system
