P016E: Closed Loop Fuel Pressure Control At Limit - Pressure Too High

Common-rail diesels regulate rail pressure in closed loop: the control module compares the rail pressure sensor with the target and adjusts a volume or pressure control valve, learning correction factors as it goes. CARB requires faults to be flagged when this feedback control does not start in time or runs out of authority. P016E means the controller is already at its limit in the 'reduce pressure' direction and the measured pressure is still above target. That can be real overpressure – a control valve that lets too much through or a blocked return – or a falsely high reading. Volvo and Mack document P016E on their 11 and 13 litre truck diesels together with P0194, caused by corroded contacts at the rail pressure sensor; the fix is a new sensor and internal harness. No public thresholds exist; Ford reports the comparable condition as P228F. Use on passenger-car diesels or petrol engines was not documented.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Avoid long trips and hard acceleration. If you smell fuel or the car stalls, do not continue.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Hard combustion noise, knocking
  • Power reduction (limp mode)
  • Sometimes no symptoms (intermittent sensor fault)

Most likely causes

  • Rail pressure sensor or its contacts/wiring (corrosion) giving a falsely high signal
  • Pressure or volume control valve sticking (lets too much through)
  • Return line from control valve or rail blocked or kinked
  • Control module software or calibration

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P016E means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • 1: Air and fuel
  • 6E: Specific fault in that system
