The engine oil temperature sensor A is an NTC thermistor fed with 5 V through a resistor: the hotter the oil, the lower the signal voltage. The engine module uses the oil temperature for variable cam timing (Ford disables it with cold oil or a sensor fault), engine protection and the oil life monitor; many engines have no such sensor and use a calculated oil temperature instead. P0196 means the signal is electrically valid but implausible – stuck, offset or rising wrongly. GM's LT4 runs three tests: after a cold soak oil, coolant and intake air must agree within 16 °C; during warm-up the oil must reach 90 °C after enough air mass; and continuously it is compared with a model (fault above 30 °C); two trips. Saab expects at least 50 °C once coolant has held 80 °C for 3 min. Caution: on Ford's 2023 diesels P0196 actually checks the coolant sensor against oil temperature (35 °C after 6 h), and Nissan traced it on the Rogue to a faulty coolant control valve.
High severity. Can I keep driving? If the red oil warning light comes on, stop the car in a safe place and turn off the engine. Do not continue until you have confirmed the level and pressure.
Symptoms
- Check engine light on (usually after two drives)
- Implausible oil temperature reading
- Possibly a cam timing code alongside
- Often no noticeable symptoms
Most likely causes
- Oil temperature sensor drifting or stuck (offset)
- Comparison sensor (coolant, intake air) or its wiring wrong
- Thermal management or coolant control valve, or thermostat faulty (oil genuinely too hot or cold)
- Contact resistance in the connector
- Control module software
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- Repair difficulty: medium
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P0196 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- 1: Air and fuel
- 96: Specific fault in that system
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep driving with code P0196?
If the red oil warning light comes on, stop the car in a safe place and turn off the engine. Do not continue until you have confirmed the level and pressure.
What causes code P0196?
The most common causes are: oil temperature sensor drifting or stuck (offset); comparison sensor (coolant, intake air) or its wiring wrong; thermal management or coolant control valve, or thermostat faulty (oil genuinely too hot or cold).
