P0224: Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch B Circuit Intermittent

With electronic throttle control the throttle body carries two position sensors, A and B, usually with opposite or offset signals, and the engine module compares them (correlation code P2135). GM and Ford give the pedal sensors their own codes (P2120 ff), so B is in practice the second throttle sensor. P0224 reports brief dropouts or jumps of sensor B that do not last long enough for the steady fault codes. No manufacturer using exactly this code was found: GM counts intermittent faults within P0222/P0223, and Ford's digital sensors report intermittent faults as P0124 for sensor A and P0229 for sensor C – after more than 0.4 s, while a steady fault needs over 4 s. Depending on frequency the result is jerking or brief limp mode.

High severity. Can I keep driving?Be careful: the car may suddenly lose power. If it goes into limp mode, get off the highway and calmly make your way to a repair shop.

Symptoms

  • Occasional jerking or power dips
  • Brief limp mode
  • Check engine light (sometimes only intermittently)

Most likely causes

  • Loose contact or corroded connector at the throttle body
  • Worn spot on the sensor track
  • Wire breaking from engine movement or vibration
  • Engine module or ground connection

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0224 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • 2: Fuel injection
  • 24: Specific fault in that system
