The engine module learns a small-quantity correction for each injector: on overrun it gives one injector a tiny test injection (GM about 1.5 mm³), measures the resulting crankshaft acceleration and corrects the injector's activation time per rail pressure step. P02DF means the learned correction for cylinder 10 has reached its upper limit at at least one pressure step: the injector needs much more activation time than nominal – it delivers too little or opens late, for example from coking. Cylinder 10 exists only on ten-cylinder engines; no manufacturer using this code was found, so the description follows CARB and the documented codes for cylinders 1–8. It differs from P01DD (over retarded), which some systems derive from the same learning.
Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive as little as possible and go to a repair shop. If you smell fuel or the engine is shaking badly, do not keep driving.
Cylinder 10 is numbered according to the manufacturer: check your engine's manual before working on it.
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Often nothing noticeable; possibly rough idle or knocking
- Possibly smoke or loss of power
Most likely causes
- Injector of cylinder 10 coked or worn (delivers too little)
- Engine software (update available for some models)
- Injector correction code not or wrongly programmed after replacement
- Disturbed crankshaft signal (worn drive belt, tone wheel, dual-mass flywheel)
- Low compression on this cylinder
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- Repair difficulty: hard
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P02DF means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- 2: Fuel injection
- DF: Specific fault in that system
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep driving with code P02DF?
Drive as little as possible and go to a repair shop. If you smell fuel or the engine is shaking badly, do not keep driving.
What causes code P02DF?
The most common causes are: injector of cylinder 10 coked or worn (delivers too little); engine software (update available for some models); injector correction code not or wrongly programmed after replacement.
