The diesel intake air flow valve A is the throttle flap ahead of the intake manifold of a diesel engine: it creates the vacuum needed for high EGR rates, lowers airflow to heat the particulate filter and catalyst during regeneration and closes at switch-off against run-on shaking. A spring holds it open when unpowered; an electric motor positions it, with a position sensor reporting back. P02E5 means the valve stays more closed than commanded or does not return to its open rest position when unpowered – more critical than stuck open, because the engine lacks air. GM sets it at over 8 % more closed than commanded with more than 80 % duty for about 4 s, or after switch-off when the unpowered valve stays below 90 % open, with the warning light in the first trip. Result: loss of power, black smoke, in extreme cases stalling.
Medium severity. Can I keep driving? You can drive in moderation. Get it repaired soon, because a loose flap can cause major damage on some engines.
Symptoms
- Check engine light on at once
- Severe loss of power, limp mode
- Black smoke, poor starting or stalling
Most likely causes
- Coking or oil carbon holding the valve closed
- Return spring broken
- Gear blocked
- Icing
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- Repair difficulty: medium
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P02E5 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- 2: Fuel injection
- E5: Specific fault in that system
