P02EA: Diesel Intake Air Flow A Position Sensor Circuit Intermittent/Erratic

The diesel intake air flow valve A is the throttle flap ahead of the intake manifold of a diesel engine: it creates the vacuum needed for high EGR rates, lowers airflow to heat the particulate filter and catalyst during regeneration and closes at switch-off against run-on shaking. A spring holds it open when unpowered; an electric motor positions it, with a position sensor reporting back. P02EA reports brief dropouts or jumps of the position signal – loose contacts, a wire breaking under movement or faulty digital sensor messages. No manufacturer using P02EA was found – GM reports such faults under its own codes, Ford does not use it – so the description follows CARB's input monitoring requirement. On a fault the valve is switched off and the spring opens it: driving is usually little affected, but EGR control is restricted and filter regeneration may be blocked.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving? You can drive in moderation. Get it repaired soon, because a loose flap can cause major damage on some engines.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light (possibly intermittent)
  • Valve occasionally switched off
  • Irregular regeneration

Most likely causes

  • Loose contact at connector or pins
  • Wire breaking under movement
  • Sensor with dropouts
  • Electromagnetic interference

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P02EA means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • 2: Fuel injection
  • EA: Specific fault in that system
