P02EC: Diesel Intake Air Flow A Control System - High Air Flow Detected

Ford's 6.7 and 3.0 diesels control the air mass through the EGR valve and the intake throttle. P02EC means the measured air mass stays above target with the control at its limit – too little EGR, or the throttle cannot restrict enough – for 10 s (6.7) or 5 s (3.0). Typical causes are a stuck-closed EGR valve or clogged EGR cooler, a throttle stuck open or a mass airflow sensor reading too high. NOx rises; driving is usually unaffected. Other manufacturers using this code were not found.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving? You can drive in moderation. Get it repaired soon, because a loose flap can cause major damage on some engines.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Higher NOx
  • Often no change in driving

Most likely causes

  • EGR valve stuck closed or EGR cooler clogged
  • Intake throttle stuck open (P02E4)
  • Mass airflow sensor reading too high
  • Boost too high

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: hard
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P02EC means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • 2: Fuel injection
  • EC: Specific fault in that system
