P0521: Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch A Range/Performance

The oil pressure sensor matters for emissions control because modern engines use it as an input – for two-stage or regulated oil pumps, hydraulic cam phasers and GM's cylinder deactivation, whose lifters switch by oil pressure. P0521 is the plausibility check. With the engine off the sensor must read about zero (GM: above 40 kPa after 10 s is a fault, Ford diesel above 70 kPa); with it running the value is compared with a model of speed and oil temperature (GM single-stage pump ±50 kPa). GM checks two-stage pumps against limits per stage and calibrates P0521 with the pump valve – so a real pressure fault can also set it. GM type B, two trips.

High severity. Can I keep driving?Avoid driving until you have checked the level and confirmed the actual pressure. If the oil warning light is on or there is a knocking noise, do not restart the engine.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Oil pressure reading implausible or fluctuating
  • Cylinder deactivation or cam phasing possibly disabled

Most likely causes

  • Sensor drifting or stuck (offset)
  • Oil pump control valve or two-stage pump stuck in the wrong stage
  • Wrong viscosity, low oil level or foaming oil
  • Worn oil pump or bearings

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0521 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • 5: Speed and idle
  • 21: Specific fault in that system

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep driving with code P0521?
