P05AA: Active Grille Air Shutter B Position Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

The active grille shutter (A = upper or only shutter, B = second) closes louvres to cut drag and speed warm-up and opens them for cooling; CARB names it as an off-cycle CO2 technology and requires its components to be monitored. A separately evaluated position sensor, as these titles assume, is described in Ford patents (Hall sensor on the motor or sensor on the linkage). No manufacturer document available to us uses this code: today the sensor sits inside the LIN actuator, whose faults appear as P059F/P05AE, P05A1/P05B0 or U0284/U0285. Without position feedback the shutter is usually driven open. P05AA (shutter B) means the signal is electrically valid but does not match the commanded position or learned travel – GM covers such deviations under P059F/P05AE instead.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving? If the car is running normally, drive in moderation to a repair shop. If it loses power or another warning appears, do not continue.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Shutter stays in one position (usually open) or does not react
  • Slightly higher consumption, longer warm-up in winter

Most likely causes

  • Louvres blocked (ice, snow, debris, bent bracket) – sensor correct, position wrong
  • Position sensor in the actuator drifting or worn
  • Basic setting not learned after replacement
  • Shaft or linkage between motor and louvres broken

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P05AA means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • 5: Speed and idle
  • AA: Specific fault in that system

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep driving with code P05AA?

If the car is running normally, drive in moderation to a repair shop. If it loses power or another warning appears, do not continue.

What causes code P05AA?

The most common causes are: louvres blocked (ice, snow, debris, bent bracket) – sensor correct, position wrong; position sensor in the actuator drifting or worn; basic setting not learned after replacement.
