P070E: Transmission Fluid Level Sensor Circuit Intermittent/Erratic

Fluid level sensors in the transmission sump report the oil level to the transmission module as a voltage; an Allison patent converts it to millimetres and only accepts readings with the vehicle at rest, warm fluid, low input speed and a tilt correction. Such sensors are mainly found in heavy automatic transmissions. No manufacturer document available to us uses this code. P070E means the level signal drops out briefly or jumps unrealistically – usually a loose contact or a wire breaking under movement. Sloshing and tilt also make readings vary, which is why valid measurements need the vehicle at rest. Because the oil level does not usually affect emissions directly, a rating without the check engine light is likely; expect a transmission warning or a missing level display.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive gently to a repair shop. If it slips, you hear clunks, or it loses its gears, do not keep driving.

Symptoms

  • Fluid level display jumps or drops out at times
  • Intermittent warning message

Most likely causes

  • Loose contact in transmission connector or harness
  • Sensor with internal contact fault
  • Contaminated or foaming fluid at the sensor

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium

What each character of P070E means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • 7: Transmission
  • 0E: Specific fault in that system
