P073D means neutral is commanded but not reached or not held. GM uses it on vehicles with electronic gear selection (shift-by-wire, e.g. Cadillac XT4): the selector or engine module compares commanded and actual range from the range sensor and flags it after 1.8–2 s in the selector module or 10 s in the engine module, after two trips. For Ford's 6F35 the supplier Sonnax describes a mechanical cause: a forward or direct clutch dragging in neutral, visible as turbine speed staying only 200–400 rpm below engine speed. The car may creep in N; range changes may be locked. The opposite, stuck in neutral, is P072A.
Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive gently to a repair shop. If it slips, you hear clunks, or it loses its gears, do not keep driving.
Symptoms
- Vehicle creeps in N or engine is loaded when shifting to N
- N selection not accepted, warning message
- Harsh engagement N to D/R (6F35)
- Check engine light after two trips (GM)
Most likely causes
- Ford 6F35: forward or direct clutch dragging (balance piston, plates, seal)
- Shift-by-wire: range actuator or park module, range sensor or its calibration
- Valve body (manual valve, missing check ball, sticking solenoid)
- CAN communication or control module
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- Repair difficulty: hard
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P073D means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- 7: Transmission
- 3D: Specific fault in that system
