A shift solenoid is an electrically switched valve in the valve body. Manufacturers use these codes differently: Ford reports an open circuit with the base code and shorts separately, newer GM units have separate low/high codes, and the letter is not tied to a valve number (Saab's 9-5: A = valve S2). P0750 is the general code for solenoid A and is used in practice for an open circuit: Ford's step automatics (2012–2023) set it when the smart driver feedback disagrees with the command for 0.5–5 s, with shorts to ground and power as P0973/P0974; Ram's 6.7 L with Aisin transmission calls it 'control circuit open', and a 2023 bulletin traces it to a leaking capacitor in the engine module. GM does not use P0750. With the solenoid unpowered the transmission falls back to a hydraulic default gear with maximum pressure.
Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive only as much as needed to reach a repair shop, staying off highways, because the car will normally stay in a fixed gear, with poor takeoff from a stop or high RPM. If the car does not accelerate well or stops engaging gears, use a tow truck.
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning lamp
- Limp mode in a fixed gear, no upshifts
- Harsh shifts from maximum line pressure
Most likely causes
- Open or corroded wire or transmission pass-through connector
- Solenoid coil open or shorted
- Internal harness or electronic module in the transmission
- Module driver faulty or valve supply missing
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- Repair difficulty: medium
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P0750 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- 7: Transmission
- 50: Specific fault in that system
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep driving with code P0750?
Drive only as much as needed to reach a repair shop, staying off highways, because the car will normally stay in a fixed gear, with poor takeoff from a stop or high RPM. If the car does not accelerate well or stops engaging gears, use a tow truck.
What causes code P0750?
The most common causes are: open or corroded wire or transmission pass-through connector; solenoid coil open or shorted; internal harness or electronic module in the transmission.
