P0767: Shift Solenoid D Stuck On

A shift solenoid is an electrically switched valve in the valve body; the module checks whether its clutch follows the command by gear ratio, shift time or a pressure switch. P0767 means solenoid D is commanded off but its clutch stays applied. Only Ford documents it, as 'functionally failed on': the low/reverse brake or the 4-5-6 clutch does not release, which brakes or ties up the transmission in higher gears. Ford's 2023 diesel sets it after three release events; the 10R80 bulletins list it with a leaking clutch cylinder. A sticking spool or proportional valve is the usual cause.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive as little as possible and gently. If the transmission slips or stays in one gear, go slowly to a repair shop or call for a tow truck.

Symptoms

  • Tie-up or jolt on shifts
  • Delayed shifts, engine revs high
  • Limp mode
  • Check engine light

Most likely causes

  • Shift spool or proportional valve sticking in the applied position
  • Clutch not releasing (stuck or burnt)
  • Solenoid stuck open or leaking
  • Control wire shorted to ground (permanently powered)

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: hard
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0767 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • 7: Transmission
  • 67: Specific fault in that system
