P0782: 2-3 Shift

Shift codes are a functional check of the gear change itself: the module compares the commanded shift with the speed trace and flags a shift that takes too long, is too short or abrupt, does not happen, flares or ties up. Ford does not use P0780–P0784 (its shift completion check feeds the solenoid codes), nor do GM's 2018–2025 tables. P0782 names the 2–3 shift as the faulty one, up or down; slip in a steady gear is reported by the ratio codes instead. No manufacturer document available to us uses this code; GM's 2006 Aisin-type tables run the same shift time check under P0780, Ford's under the solenoid codes.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive as little as possible and gently. If the transmission slips or stays in one gear, go slowly to a repair shop or call for a tow truck.

Symptoms

  • Harsh, delayed or missing 2-3 shift
  • Engine flare during the shift
  • Warning lamp
  • Limp mode

Most likely causes

  • Fluid level wrong, fluid worn or contaminated
  • Valve body, shift or pressure valve sticking
  • Worn clutches or bands
  • Module software or shift adaption
  • Faulty speed sensor signal

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: hard
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0782 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • 7: Transmission
  • 82: Specific fault in that system
