P07A2: Transmission Friction Element A Performance/Stuck Off

Each friction element (clutch or brake) has three functional codes: slip while commanded locked (P079A ff), performance/stuck off – it does not apply or applies too weakly – and stuck on – it does not release. P07A2 concerns clutch A. Ford's DPS6 PowerShift dry dual-clutch (Fiesta, Focus) uses it for clutch A – input shaft 1 with gears 1, 3 and 5 – as 'functionally stuck off', next to the electrical codes of its electric clutch actuator; Ford publishes no thresholds. A GM bulletin for the 2017 LaCrosse and 2017–19 XT5 lists P07A2 as 'transmission clutch 1 performance' together with ratio codes, caused by a misaligned range actuator. GM's hybrids do not use it.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive gently to a repair shop. If it slips, you hear clunks, or it loses its gears, do not keep driving.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or transmission warning
  • Gear missing or slipping, weak acceleration
  • Limp mode

Most likely causes

  • Clutch A plates worn or piston seal leaking
  • Too little apply pressure (fluid, pump, valve)
  • Clutch actuator or valve sticking (DCT: electric actuator)
  • Module software or lost adaption

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: hard
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P07A2 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • 7: Transmission
  • A2: Specific fault in that system
