The transmission range control module is the separate shift-by-wire control unit that reads the selector and drives the range actuator. P07F5 means its supply voltage is too low. No manufacturer document available to us uses the generic code, but GM checks exactly this under its own P17B0: battery voltage at the range control module at or below 9 V for 5 s within a 6 s window, type C without MIL. With too little voltage the actuator may not set the range or park pawl reliably; GM also suspends further checks of the module. A weak battery or a resistance in the module's fuse, supply or ground is the usual cause.
Medium severity. Can I keep driving? If the battery warning light comes on, you could get stranded. Turn off electrical accessories and go straight to a repair shop.
Symptoms
- Shift warning
- Range or park lock reacts late or not at all
- Often together with battery voltage codes
Most likely causes
- Weak battery or charging system
- Fuse, supply or ground wire of the module with high resistance
- High actuator motor current on a weak supply
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- Repair difficulty: easy
- It can trigger limp mode.
What each character of P07F5 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- 7: Transmission
- F5: Specific fault in that system
