The four-wheel-drive switch tells the engine module which transfer case range is engaged. 4WD low changes the ratio of engine to road speed by about 2.7:1 on GM trucks, so GM uses 'not in 4WD low' as an enable condition for idle speed and clutch pedal checks; that is why CARB requires monitoring such inputs. P0836 is the general circuit fault of this switch – an open or an invalid state. No manufacturer document available to us uses it: GM reports the same part from 2006 to 2025 as P2771 '4WD Low Switch Circuit', comparing the switch position with the measured transfer case ratio while driving (from 15 mph, diesel 5 mph, 2–7 s), without MIL on gasoline and type B on diesel. Ford has no such code. The 4WD indicator may flash and dependent diagnostics may be suspended.
Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive gently to a repair shop. If it slips, you hear clunks, or it loses its gears, do not keep driving.
Symptoms
- 4WD indicator flashes or stays off
- 4WD range cannot be selected or display wrong
- Possibly check engine lamp (depends on manufacturer)
Most likely causes
- Position switch or sensor at the transfer case faulty
- Wire or connector at the transfer case corroded or torn
- Selector switch in the cabin faulty
- Control module or software
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- Repair difficulty: medium
- It can trigger limp mode.
What each character of P0836 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- 8: Transmission
- 36: Specific fault in that system
