P0867: Transmission Fluid Pressure

P0867 to P0869 cover the system or line pressure of the gearbox as a whole: a pressure sensor measures it and the control module compares it with the pressure it commands. Faults of the sensor circuit itself have their own codes (Chrysler 68RFE P0932 ff), the single switches A to H have theirs (P0840 ff). Thresholds are not published; the codes are documented in bulletins for the Ram 68RFE and for the Tremec dual clutch of Corvette C8 and Maserati MC20. P0867 is the general pressure fault. GM's Corvette bulletin reads it as 'no system pressure': the pump delivers nothing or the fluid is almost gone, so valve cleaning is pointless and the gearbox needs a mechanical check. The car may lose drive completely.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive gently to a repair shop. If it slips, you hear clunks, or it loses its gears, do not keep driving.

Symptoms

  • Transmission warning lamp or MIL on
  • Weak or no drive
  • Limp mode, car may be stranded

Most likely causes

  • Fluid level extremely low or leak
  • Fluid pump or its drive faulty
  • Pressure regulator or relief valve sticking
  • System pressure sensor faulty

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: hard
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0867 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • 8: Transmission
  • 67: Specific fault in that system
