Clutch position sensor B reports the position of the second clutch or its actuator, the counterpart of sensor A (P0805 ff). The only documented user is Ford's dry DPS6 dual clutch in Fiesta and Focus: clutch B, for reverse and the even gears, is moved by a three-phase motor whose Hall sensors give its position, and the gearbox module drives it through an internal motor driver. For P087D no maker is documented. It means the sensor signal is above its limit: an open signal or ground wire with a pull-up, or a short to voltage. As with sensor A (P0808), clutch B can then no longer be position-controlled and the gearbox goes into limp mode.
Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive gently to a repair shop. If it slips, you hear clunks, or it loses its gears, do not keep driving.
Symptoms
- MIL or transmission warning on
- Jerky take-off or shifts
- Reverse or even gears missing, limp mode
Most likely causes
- Signal or ground wire open
- Signal wire shorted to voltage
- Sensor faulty
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- Repair difficulty: hard
- It can trigger limp mode.
What each character of P087D means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- 8: Transmission
- 7D: Specific fault in that system
