P0883: TCM Power Input Signal High

The TCM power input codes watch the supply voltage of the gearbox module or of its solenoid supply. Without a proper supply all solenoids go dead and the gearbox falls back to its hydraulic emergency gear with maximum line pressure: a fixed gear, harsh engagement, no shifting. Ford's external gearbox modules check a window of 9 to 16 V; GM reports the same under P0562/P0563. P0883 means the supply is too high: Ford sets it above 16 V, continuously and with MIL; GM's counterpart P0563 sets at 18 V. Typical triggers are a failed alternator regulator or a jump start with 24 V. Overvoltage endangers the output stages, so the module may switch the solenoids off.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving? It depends on the symptoms. If the car is running normally you can go to a repair shop; if it goes into limp mode, drive as little as possible.

Symptoms

  • MIL on
  • Charging warning or unusually bright lights
  • Overvoltage codes in other modules

Most likely causes

  • Alternator voltage regulator faulty (overcharging)
  • Jump start with 24 V or charger in boost mode
  • Poor battery ground, regulator measures wrongly
  • Module measurement faulty

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0883 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • 8: Transmission
  • 83: Specific fault in that system
