Gear lever position sensor 2 is the redundant second sensor of an electronic selector lever, next to sensor 1 (P0821 ff), for the X or Y axis. The only documented user is GM's electronic range selection with PWM Hall sensors, as in the Cadillac XT4, and only for range, low and high. Following GM's patent, an invalid sensor is dropped and the other carries on; with both invalid the module can request park. P089F, the general circuit fault of Y sensor 2, is used by no maker found; GM reports that sensor under P08A0 to P08A2. In GM's patent a sensor counts as invalid as a whole once its X or Y value fails.
Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive gently to a repair shop. If it slips, you hear clunks, or it loses its gears, do not keep driving.
Symptoms
- Gearbox or selector warning in the cluster
- Range selection delayed or limited
- Usually still drivable, sensor 1 takes over
Most likely causes
- Wire or connector at the selector module open
- Sensor 2 faulty
- Corrosion from liquid in the console
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- Repair difficulty: medium
- It can trigger limp mode.
What each character of P089F means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- 8: Transmission
- 9F: Specific fault in that system
