P0915: Gear Shift Position Circuit A Range/Performance

Plausibility fault of the gear shift position signal on circuit A in an automated manual gearbox. The voltage stays within its electrical limits, but the reading does not fit: the signal does not change while the shift actuator moves, or the engaged position does not match the learned gear positions. No manufacturer documents this code in freely citable material. A Nissan/Aichi patent points out that sensor brackets on shift forks can deform under vibration and spoil the reading, and an Aisin AI patent describes the fallback when a stroke sensor can no longer be trusted. CARB requires rationality checks on such inputs. P0914, P0916 and P0917 are the electrical faults, P0919 a shift movement that misses its target. Shifting becomes limited or stops.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive as little as possible and gently. If the transmission slips or stays in one gear, go slowly to a repair shop or call for a tow truck.

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Gearbox drops to neutral while driving
  • Gears refused or engaged only after a delay

Most likely causes

  • Worn or drifting shift position sensor, redundant tracks disagree
  • Bent sensor bracket or displaced magnet on the shift rod
  • Gear positions not relearned after actuator or TCM replacement
  • High resistance at connector pins distorting the signal

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: hard
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0915 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • 9: Transmission
  • 15: Specific fault in that system
