P095C: Gear Shift Position Circuit C Low

The signal of shift position sensor C in an automated manual gearbox lies below its permitted voltage window. Typical reasons are a signal wire shorted to ground, a lost sensor supply or a sensor with an internal fault pulling its output down. Because the value is physically impossible, the control unit can flag it quickly without comparing it to other channels. No manufacturer documents this code publicly. A Nissan/Aichi patent shows shift stroke sensors as the position feedback for gear engagement, an Aisin AI patent the fallback strategy when such a sensor drops out. CARB requires circuit checks on such inputs. P095D is the high counterpart, P095A the general and P095B the plausibility fault; P0916 and P091C are the low faults of A and B.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive as little as possible and gently. If the transmission slips or stays in one gear, go slowly to a repair shop or call for a tow truck.

Symptoms

  • Transmission or engine warning light on
  • Fallback mode with restricted gears
  • Gearbox may refuse to leave neutral

Most likely causes

  • Signal wire of sensor C shorted to ground
  • Open or shorted 5 V supply of the sensor
  • Internally failed shift position sensor C

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: hard
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P095C means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • 9: Transmission
  • 5C: Specific fault in that system

Frequently asked questions
