P097F: Shift Solenoid F Control Circuit/Open

Open-circuit fault in the drive circuit of shift solenoid F. It is the only code in its family for letter F, since J2012 has no range/performance, low or high codes for F in this block. No maker was found to document it. Hyundai's Genesis bulletin for the eight-speed (2017–2018 G80 and G90) shows how F is handled in practice: an electrical fault of shift control solenoid F (labelled 8LR) is reported under P2709 and fixed by replacing the solenoid. Other makers with six or more clutches use their own codes. A P097F would follow the CARB requirement to test every transmission output for circuit continuity, by analogy with GM's open tests for solenoids 1 to 3.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive as little as possible and gently. If the transmission slips or stays in one gear, go slowly to a repair shop or call for a tow truck.

Symptoms

  • Warning light or MIL on
  • Gears that need solenoid F unavailable
  • Limp mode

Most likely causes

  • Open coil of shift solenoid F
  • Loose or corroded terminal at the valve body connector
  • Broken wire between module and solenoid F
  • Faulty driver stage in the transmission control module

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: hard
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P097F means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • 9: Transmission
  • 7F: Specific fault in that system
