P0A22: Generator Torque Sensor Circuit

In series or power-split hybrids a separate electric machine runs as generator, driven by the combustion engine. A Honda patent claims a torque sensor inside the hollow shaft of either the traction motor or this generator. P0A22 is the general circuit fault of the generator torque sensor: the control unit receives no usable signal at all, without a more specific low, high or intermittent pattern. No manufacturer documents P0A22 publicly; CARB requires an approved monitoring plan for the generator system. Related: P0A23 plausibility, P0A24 low, P0A25 high, P0A26 intermittent. Charging and engine-driven power generation may be limited.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving? If the battery warning light comes on, you could get stranded. Turn off electrical accessories and go straight to a repair shop.

Symptoms

  • Hybrid system warning light
  • Reduced battery charging by the engine
  • Limited system power

Most likely causes

  • Sensor connector at the generator unplugged, loose or corroded
  • Open circuit in the sensor harness
  • Generator torque sensor or its electronics failed

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: hard
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0A22 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • A: Hybrid or air and fuel
  • 22: Specific fault in that system
