P0A44 reports that the speed derived from the motor A resolver is above the highest speed the motor may run. Mitsubishi uses it on the 2023 Outlander PHEV front motor: set at 15,500 rpm or more for 0.5 s with module supply above 8 V, judged only when the position sensor itself is fault-free; the guided fix after other codes are ruled out is a new front motor. GM covers the same check under its own code P1B0D (above 11,500 rpm, Type A) instead of P0A44. A true overspeed can come from a slipping drivetrain or a mechanical fault; a false one from a corrupted speed signal. P0A3F to P0A43 cover the sensor circuit. The system cuts motor torque to protect the rotor.
High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.
Symptoms
- Electric drive torque cut during acceleration or high speed
- Hybrid/EV system warning and MIL
- Reduced top speed in limp mode
Most likely causes
- Mechanical fault in the front motor or its drivetrain (Mitsubishi replaces the motor)
- Real overspeed from wheel spin or a slipping coupling
- Disturbed resolver signal producing a false speed value
- Motor control module calculating speed incorrectly
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P0A44 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- A: Hybrid or air and fuel
- 44: Specific fault in that system
