P0B92: Hybrid/EV Battery Voltage Sense R Circuit Low

P0B92 stands for an implausibly low reading on sense R. In GM's lithium-ion battery controllers of 2016 and 2019 the limit is 0.2 V or less for 1.4 s inside a 2 s window, Type A; the test is suspended while an open sense line fault is active, so a broken lead appears as P0B90 rather than P0B92. Programmes with a separate battery sensor module (GM 16OBDG02) use under 0.20 V in 14 of 18 samples. The eAssist mild hybrid applies 1.4 V, 7 of 10 samples, Type B. In the 2012 two-mode trucks R is NiMH block 18, and blocks 18 and 19 must both read under 2 V in 15 of 20 samples (Type B). A short of the sense lead to ground or to a lower cell is the classic cause.

High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.

Symptoms

  • MIL and hybrid or EV system message
  • Propulsion limited, possibly no restart

Most likely causes

  • Sense lead R chafed through and touching ground or a lower cell
  • Failed input for channel R on the cell monitoring board
  • Cell or block on channel R genuinely collapsed

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0B92 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • B: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • 92: Specific fault in that system
