P0BA8: Hybrid/EV Battery Voltage Sense V Circuit Intermittent/Erratic

P0BA8 completes the five codes of channel V and is meant for an unstable rather than a failed sense V signal. There is no public manufacturer documentation for it. GM covers channel V in its 2011 Volt, eAssist, 2016 and 2019 tables but never with an intermittent monitor, only with P0BA4 to P0BA7. The code exists because CARB 1968.2 requires battery voltage sensors of hybrid storage systems to be monitored and fault codes to isolate the smallest replaceable unit, and J2012 provides an intermittent slot for every sense channel. A fault of this kind would typically be traced to a connection that loses contact under vibration or thermal cycling. Channel W follows from P0BA9.

High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.

Symptoms

  • Occasional hybrid or EV warning
  • Fault not reproducible during short workshop test

Most likely causes

  • Contact of lead V lost intermittently under vibration
  • Joint on channel V opening with thermal cycling
  • Corroded connector pin for channel V

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0BA8 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • B: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • A8: Specific fault in that system
