P0C4E: Drive Motor A Position Exceeded Learning Limit

P0C4E says the resolver offset of drive motor A was learned, yet the learned value is unacceptable. That offset lines up the zero point of the resolver with the rotor magnets. GM rejects a correction angle beyond 30 degrees, or a new value that differs from the stored one by more than 10 degrees; the learn happens at key-off with the motor under 20 rpm and over 192 V on the DC link. Volt and ELR tables rate it Type A, and from 2016 the deviation has to show up on five key-off cycles. Kia links P0C4E00 on 2022-24 Sorento PHEV AWD to a jerky change between electric and hybrid drive and cures it with a new transaxle plus updated hybrid control software (TSB TRA112). P0C17 is the case with no valid learn at all.

High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.

Symptoms

  • Malfunction indicator lamp, often first noticed after a repair
  • Jerk or rough feel when switching between electric and hybrid drive
  • Reduced electric drive power

Most likely causes

  • Resolver or rotor position shifted after replacing the motor, resolver stator or transaxle
  • Internal transaxle fault on affected Kia Sorento PHEV models (TSB TRA112)
  • Hybrid or motor control software that needs an update
  • Damaged resolver that delivers a shifted angle

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0C4E means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • C: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • 4E: Specific fault in that system
