P0CA7 is set when more current flows out of the hybrid or EV battery than the controller allows. Audi documents it on 48 V mild hybrids (A6, A7, A8, later also Q7, Q8 and S/RS versions, 2018 to 2024): the battery management of the 48 V battery, J1120, stores P0CA700 as discharge current too high, often with U046900 in the engine module, and the cluster shows an electrical system warning. Audi's 2020 bulletin 2058831/1 fixes it with new software for the belt starter generator; revision 9 from 2023 adds a hardware test of that generator. Stellantis lists P0CA7-00 in bulletin 08-054-22 for the 2021 Wrangler 4xe among codes that light the MIL falsely and are cured by a battery pack control module flash. P0CA6 covers the charging direction.
High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.
Symptoms
- Electrical system or battery warning in the cluster
- Start-stop or electric assistance temporarily unavailable
- Check-engine lamp on plug-in hybrids
Most likely causes
- Starter/generator or battery module software (Audi 2058831, Stellantis 08-054-22)
- Belt starter generator drawing excessive current
- Battery current sensor or battery management misreading
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P0CA7 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- C: Subsystem depends on the code range
- A7: Specific fault in that system
