P0CAD stands for an electrical problem with battery temperature sensor N that the controller cannot assign to a specific failure type. Public manufacturer documentation for this exact code does not exist. GM's 2011 hybrid rationality list places N fourteenth among sixteen sensors, while its tables from 2012 onward cover N only with the specific codes P0CAE to P0CB1. On the plug-in Outlander, Mitsubishi equates N with module sensor [13] and likewise separates only rationality, short and open. CARB section (e)(15.3.1) is the basis for permanent monitoring of such input circuits. A pack controller without this reading has to plan conservatively for that section. Because the sensor lives inside the traction battery, checks are made only after the high-voltage system has been isolated.
High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.
Symptoms
- Hybrid or EV system message
- Battery power reduced until repaired
Most likely causes
- Connector or wire fault between sensor N and the monitoring board
- Thermistor N defective
- Faulty input channel of the cell monitoring board
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P0CAD means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- C: Subsystem depends on the code range
- AD: Specific fault in that system
