P0D43: Battery Charger 14 Volt Output Voltage Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

P0D43 says the voltage reported for the charger's 14 V output does not fit other measurements of the low-voltage system. GM's battery charger control module in the 2011-2014 Volt and the ELR compares the reading with the run/crank signal voltage and with the voltage of a further enable line (HVEMB); a difference of 6 V or more for 4 of 5 s stores a Type A fault with MIL. The test is suspended while the out-of-range codes P0D44/P0D45 or a reference voltage fault are present. In GM's design this output is a low-voltage DC stage inside the charger, separate from the Volt's accessory power module. A failing sense circuit in the charger is most likely, a poor ground or 12 V feed less so; charging can be affected.

High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.

Symptoms

  • MIL on (GM)
  • Charging interrupted or not completed

Most likely causes

  • Low-voltage sense circuit inside the charger reads wrong
  • Poor ground or 12 V feed at the charger skews the comparison
  • Charger module software

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

What each character of P0D43 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • D: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • 43: Specific fault in that system
