P0D95: Battery Charger Coupler Unlock Control Circuit/Open

P0D95 concerns the release direction: the output that withdraws the locking pin shows an open circuit when the module commands unlock. Because J2012 assigns lock and unlock separate control circuits, the module watches each drive direction on its own, and a break can disable only the release. That is the more awkward failure, since the cable may stay latched in the inlet after charging; inlets therefore carry a mechanical emergency release, which Audi's Q4 e-tron bulletins mention as the fallback when the plug will not come out. No manufacturer documents P0D95 publicly; it rests on CARB's rule that output components be checked for circuit faults and proper response to commands, and on lock actuator patents such as GM's geared-motor design (US9279276B2). The shorted variants are P0D96/P0D97, the locking side P0D91–P0D94.

High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.

Symptoms

  • Charge cable stays locked in the inlet after charging
  • Plug can only be freed with the emergency release
  • Charging system fault message

Most likely causes

  • Open unlock drive wire or loose pin in the actuator connector
  • Motor winding or internal contact of the actuator open
  • Corrosion in the connector at the inlet from road splash
  • Unlock driver stage of the controlling module defective

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium

What each character of P0D95 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • D: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • 95: Specific fault in that system
