The lock position sensor tells the vehicle whether the pin that holds the charging plug in the inlet is extended or retracted. Without that feedback the car cannot confirm a latched plug and refuses fast charging. A GM patent, US8936482B2, measures how far the actuator has moved the pin, with a Hall element, a potentiometer or an end-stop switch as options. P0D9E is the general circuit fault of this feedback. Ford lists P0D9E:00 in TSBs 22-2355 and 23-2014 for the F-150 Lightning, Mach-E and e-Transit built 2021 to 2023, stored by the SOBDM together with P0D93, P0D94, P0D98 and P0DA0. The cause there is mechanical: pulling the DC plug without holding the release button down breaks or loses the actuator pin, and Ford swaps only the lock actuator. Range, low, high and intermittent faults are P0D9F to P0DA2.
High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.
Symptoms
- DC fast charging inoperative
- Charger Service Required message in the cluster (Ford)
- Locking pin visibly damaged or absent at the inlet
Most likely causes
- Actuator pin broken or missing after the plug was pulled while latched (Ford)
- Open or shorted feedback wire between lock actuator and control module
- Corroded or loose connector at the lock actuator
- Evaluation input of the controlling module defective
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- Repair difficulty: medium
What each character of P0D9E means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- D: Subsystem depends on the code range
- 9E: Specific fault in that system
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep driving with code P0D9E?
If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.
What causes code P0D9E?
The most common causes are: actuator pin broken or missing after the plug was pulled while latched (Ford); open or shorted feedback wire between lock actuator and control module; corroded or loose connector at the lock actuator.
