P0DB8 is the circuit code for balancing channel D. Here the controller sees a hardware problem: the switch, resistor or cell tap of group D reports a state that cannot be valid, typically an open lead or a short to a neighbouring line. Toshiba's patent US20130026994A1 shows how a monitoring chip can tell which balancing terminal is open and pass that to the main controller, which then decides whether the module or the cell unit must be repaired. CARB 13 CCR 1968.2 calls for this monitoring on hybrids. Audi's bulletin 2046556 names P0DB800 for the 2016 A3 e-tron, where the car could also wrongly report a plugged-in charger; new software cured it.
High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.
Symptoms
- MIL and battery system message
- Possible limitation of electric power
Most likely causes
- Open balancing terminal or lead in group D
- Short between neighbouring sense/balancing lines
- Monitoring chip of group D defective
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P0DB8 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- D: Subsystem depends on the code range
- B8: Specific fault in that system
