P0DEB: Hybrid/EV Battery Pack Coolant Control Valve C Control Circuit Low

P0DEB is set when the drive line of coolant control valve C reads too low, which almost always means a short to ground somewhere between controller and valve. No manufacturer documents P0DEB publicly. GM's 2011 Volt tables for valve A show the logic: with system voltage above 9 V, a low reading on driver line 1 during reverse travel counts as a failure, and 90 failures out of 100 samples at 6.25 ms set a Type B code. A short to ground lets current bypass the load, so many drivers protect themselves by shutting off; an overheated or overloaded driver has its own code, P0E22. Chafed insulation near brackets, coolant in the connector and an internal short in the valve motor are the usual finds. The valve then stays wherever it was. Open circuit is P0DE8, short to voltage P0DEC.

High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.

Symptoms

  • Valve C no longer moves, temperature control in fallback mode
  • Charging or drive power reduced at temperature extremes
  • Malfunction indicator lamp on

Most likely causes

  • Chafed wire shorting to body ground
  • Coolant or water in the valve connector
  • Internal short in the valve motor

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P0DEB means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 0: Generic code: same on every make
  • D: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • EB: Specific fault in that system
