P0E63 is the high-level counterpart: the enable signal to charger A sits above the level its commanded state allows, for instance because it touches a 12 V feed. In practice the charger may then be woken although no charging is requested, which can drain the 12 V battery while parked, or it may ignore a switch-off command. No manufacturer documents P0E63 publicly. GM documents only the generic enable fault P0E61 for the 2016 Volt (VICM) and in the 2019 hybrid tables (HPC2), evaluated via a hardware fault flag with 30 failures in 40 samples as Type B; separate low and high codes are not listed there. CARB counts any charger fault that disturbs charging as one a plug-in hybrid must detect. A wire chafed against a powered harness or an internal short in the charger are the usual suspects.
High severity. Can I keep driving? If the car still runs, drive as little as possible and go to a specialized repair shop. Do not touch the orange cables: they carry high voltage.
Symptoms
- 12 V battery drained while parked
- Charger active or charging not ending as expected
- Charging system warning
Most likely causes
- Enable wire shorted to a 12 V supply
- Enable input of the charger faulty
- Driver stage in the commanding module stuck on
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- Repair difficulty: hard
What each character of P0E63 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 0: Generic code: same on every make
- E: Subsystem depends on the code range
- 63: Specific fault in that system
