P2038: Reductant Injection Air Pressure Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance

P2038 does not mean a broken wire. The air pressure sensor A of an air-assisted DEF injector delivers a valid voltage, yet the value does not fit the operating state: it may show pressure while the air supply valve is closed, too little pressure while it is open, or fail to move when air is switched on and off. No manufacturer documents P2038 publicly. Deutz, which documents the electrical faults of the same sensor, reports such cases under its own codes instead: P1119 for an implausible air pressure signal, P1124 for air pressure too low and P13FF when air pressure and DEF pressure at the pump appear swapped. CARB requires plausibility checks on every input that the dosing strategy depends on. Leaks in the air line, a sticking valve or a drifting sensor are the usual reasons.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Deal with it soon. If the instrument cluster shows a countdown, the car may not restart once it reaches zero.

Symptoms

  • Emission warning lamp on
  • DEF dosing reduced or stopped
  • Rising NOx emissions and possible derate

Most likely causes

  • Leaking or kinked air line between valve and dosing unit
  • Sensor reading drifted or clogged pressure port
  • Air supply valve sticking open or closed
  • Insufficient pressure from the vehicle air system

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: hard
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P2038 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 0: Subsystem depends on the code range
  • 38: Specific fault in that system

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep driving with code P2038?

Deal with it soon. If the instrument cluster shows a countdown, the car may not restart once it reaches zero.

What causes code P2038?

The most common causes are: leaking or kinked air line between valve and dosing unit; sensor reading drifted or clogged pressure port; air supply valve sticking open or closed.
