P2050 reports an open circuit at the first DEF injector of Bank 2, the cylinder bank opposite cylinder 1. The code only makes sense on engines whose two exhaust banks each feed their own SCR branch with a separate valve. No manufacturer publicly documents P2050; V-engines found in bulletins, such as the Cummins 5.0 L V8 in Nissan's Titan XD, combine both banks into one SCR line and report their only valve as Bank 1, unit 1. Detection would mirror P2047: GM's 2018 diesel logic reads the driver status every 100 ms with more than 11 V and needs 30 bad samples out of 60. CARB requires such actuators to be checked as comprehensive components. Suspects are plug and harness on the second exhaust branch and the coil itself; without dosing that branch emits more NOx.
Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Deal with it soon. If the instrument cluster shows a countdown, the car may not restart once it reaches zero.
Bank 2 is the side without cylinder 1, so it only exists on V or boxer engines.
Symptoms
- MIL on
- Higher NOx from the Bank 2 branch
- DEF warning, later inducement possible
Most likely causes
- Unplugged or corroded connector at the Bank 2 injector
- Broken wire in the harness of the second exhaust branch
- Open coil in the Bank 2 DEF injector
What to check, in order
Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.
Good to know
- Repair difficulty: medium
- It can trigger limp mode.
- It affects emissions.
What each character of P2050 means
- P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
- 2: Generic code: same on every make
- 0: Subsystem depends on the code range
- 50: Specific fault in that system
