P2119: Throttle Actuator A Control Throttle Body Range/Performance

This is a mechanical performance check of the electronic throttle body. GM calls it Throttle Closed Position Performance: after the motor is de-energized the return springs must bring the plate into its default (limp) position, e.g. 1.32-1.90 V on TP sensor 1 in GM's 2006 tables; 15 failed samples in a row set it. A Bosch-based GM ECM times the spring return at key-on (fault above 0.56 s). Toyota, Lexus, Ford (Ranger/Bronco, ice behind the throttle) and Mitsubishi use the code too. Unlike P2101 (position error while driven) or P2118 (motor current), P2119 points at a sticking or iced plate or a weak spring; the engine may enter limp mode.

High severity. Can I keep driving?Be careful: the car may suddenly lose power. If it goes into limp mode, get off the highway and calmly make your way to a repair shop.

Symptoms

  • Engine warning lamp on
  • Reduced power or limp mode
  • Hesitation or uneven acceleration
  • Raised or unstable idle

Most likely causes

  • Carbon deposits make the throttle plate stick
  • Water or ice in the intake behind the throttle body
  • Weak return spring or worn gear in the throttle body
  • ECM software that sets the code falsely (update available)

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P2119 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 1: Air and fuel
  • 19: Specific fault in that system
