P213F: Fuel Pump System Fault - Forced Engine Shutdown

P213F is the supply-side twin of P213E: the engine module shut the engine down because the fuel pump system – electric lift pump, its relay or control module, or the engine-driven high-pressure pump – no longer behaves in a way it can accept. No manufacturer documents P213F publicly, so the trigger is not known in detail. How closely pumps are watched can be seen in Ford's 2023 diesel summary: the lift pump relay circuits are checked for open and shorts within 0.2 s, and the duty-cycle feedback of the pump must stay between 78 and 82 %. A deliberate shutdown goes further than those circuit codes and is normally stored together with them. Injection-side faults are logged as P213E instead. The engine stops or will not restart; towing is usually needed.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Avoid long trips and hard acceleration. If you smell fuel or the car stalls, do not continue.

Symptoms

  • Engine shuts off while driving
  • No restart or very long cranking
  • Check engine lamp with fuel pump codes

Most likely causes

  • Electric lift pump or its control module failed
  • Pump relay, fuse or wiring fault
  • Worn or seized high-pressure pump
  • Clogged filter or empty tank starving the pump

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: hard
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P213F means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 1: Air and fuel
  • 3F: Specific fault in that system
