P217E: Fuel Injector Group H Supply Voltage Circuit Low

P217E flags the supply of injector group H as grounded, on GM's direct-injection V8 engines the injector of cylinder 8. GM lists it for the 6.2 LT4 in 2018 and in its 2016 table 16OBDG07A. With the high-side driver switched on, a current of 25 A or more means the line has found a path to ground; at 11 V or more, 10 bad samples out of 20 taken at 100 ms set the code as type A and light the MIL right away. Since the per-cylinder low-side codes P0282 and P0283 cover the return line, this code points specifically at the feed wire, the injector body or the driver. A practical check is to unplug the module and the injector and measure the feed wire to ground before suspecting the module. The engine loses cylinder 8. P217F is the high fault.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Drive as little as possible and go to a repair shop. If you smell fuel or the engine is shaking badly, do not keep driving.

Symptoms

  • Check engine lamp on immediately
  • Cylinder 8 misfire, engine shakes

Most likely causes

  • Cylinder 8 feed wire chafed to ground
  • Cylinder 8 injector shorted to its housing
  • Engine control module output stage faulty

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: hard
  • It can trigger limp mode.
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P217E means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 1: Air and fuel
  • 7E: Specific fault in that system
