P2183: Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor 2 Circuit Range/Performance

P2183 means sensor 2 delivers a voltage inside the valid band, yet the temperature does not fit the other readings. Most makers test this after a long cold soak, when all temperatures should match. The VW Touareg with engine CNRB sets it when the radiator outlet sensor differs by more than 35 K from intake air, ambient or fuel temperature at start-up. RAM 1500 models with the rear axle heater compare that loop with engine coolant and oil after 8 hours and allow 30 °C; a block heater can trip it falsely. Ford reflashes Escape and Corsair plug-in hybrids where an active cabin heater soak timer set P2183 wrongly. Mazda3 sensors at the radiator bottom let water in and read too low. Real causes are corrosion and drift; others need a software update. Low, high and erratic signals are P2184 to P2186.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Watch the temperature gauge. If it climbs or a warning appears, stop the car in a safe place and turn off the engine: overheating can cause serious damage.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light, often right after a cold start
  • Remote start disabled on some trucks
  • Engine overheat message without real overheating on some hybrids

Most likely causes

  • Water ingress or internal corrosion in sensor 2 shifting its reading
  • Control software misjudging soak time, block heater or cabin heater use
  • Coolant hoses at the sensor loop swapped or air trapped after service
  • Aged sensor element drifting out of tolerance

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: easy
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P2183 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 1: Air and fuel
  • 83: Specific fault in that system
