P219D: Cylinder 2 Air-Fuel Ratio Imbalance

P219D singles out cylinder 2. On engines with two banks, whether cylinder 2 sits on bank 1 or bank 2 depends on the maker's numbering, which decides whether P219A or P219B may appear alongside. Bulletins show three very different outcomes. Kia replaced the high-pressure injector and its clip plus the high-pressure and crossover fuel pipes on 2022 Carnival models with the 3.5 GDI V6 when any of P219C to P21A1 had set. Hyundai fixed P219C to P219F on the 2018 Sonata 2.0 turbo with ECM and TCM software and noted that drivers feel nothing. Stellantis found a charge-air cooler with a loose crimp on the 2025 RAM 1500 3.0 Hurricane, which set P219D among other cylinder codes along with a whistling noise and reduced boost. A real cylinder 2 fault is confirmed with an injector balance test and a leak-down test.

High severity. Can I keep driving?Avoid driving if the light is flashing or the engine is shaking: unburned gasoline can damage the catalytic converter.

Cylinder 2 is numbered according to the manufacturer: check your engine's manual before working on it.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Often no driveability change
  • Reduced power or whistling noise if a charge-air leak is the cause

Most likely causes

  • Faulty high-pressure injector at cylinder 2 (direct injection)
  • Charge-air leak upsetting cylinder filling (e.g. RAM 3.0 Hurricane)
  • Detection logic corrected by software update (e.g. Hyundai Sonata 2.0T)
  • Compression loss at cylinder 2

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P219D means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 1: Air and fuel
  • 9D: Specific fault in that system
