P2240: O2 Sensor Positive Current Control Circuit/Open (Bank 2 Sensor 1)

P2240 is the open pump-current circuit of the front wide-band sensor on bank 2, so it only exists on V engines and boxers. Ford's summaries (2012 and 2020-2023) introduced it to replace P0154; detection works as on bank 1, by lambda failing to react to reference-current pulses or by the NTK interface chip. VW's 2014 Touareg and CC books flag 1.49-1.51 V combined with a lambda controller offset above 0.07 or a controller at its limit. GM's 2005 V6 adds a fuel cut-off test (signal below 1.7 V for 2 s). FCA reflashes the PCM for P2240 on the 2025 Ram 1500 and Wagoneer with the 3.0 Hurricane (bulletins 18-071-26, 18-082/083-26), and Jaguar Land Rover lists it among the 3.0 V6 sensor faults caused by water shock.

Medium severity. Can I keep driving?Yes, you can normally drive in moderation, but get it repaired soon: you will use more fuel and the catalytic converter can be damaged over time.

Bank 2 is the side without cylinder 1, so it only exists on V or boxer engines. Sensor 1 is the oxygen sensor before the catalytic converter.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Bank 2 lambda value stuck at 1.0 in live data
  • Higher fuel consumption

Most likely causes

  • Open pump-current wire or loose pin at the bank 2 sensor connector
  • Bank 2 front sensor damaged by water or thermal shock
  • PCM calibration that sets the code without a hardware fault (FCA 2025 Hurricane)

What to check, in order

Start with the simplest. You can tick off each step.

Good to know

  • Repair difficulty: medium
  • It affects emissions.

What each character of P2240 means

  • P: Powertrain: engine and transmission
  • 2: Generic code: same on every make
  • 2: Fuel injection
  • 40: Specific fault in that system

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep driving with code P2240?

Yes, you can normally drive in moderation, but get it repaired soon: you will use more fuel and the catalytic converter can be damaged over time.

What causes code P2240?

The most common causes are: open pump-current wire or loose pin at the bank 2 sensor connector; bank 2 front sensor damaged by water or thermal shock; pCM calibration that sets the code without a hardware fault (FCA 2025 Hurricane).
